Born to Cuban immigrants in New York and raised in Miami, I am an artist and designer currently based in Denver. I am the founder and Creative Director of Crosshatch, a branding and graphic design studio, and a studio artist at RiNo Art District Studios.

I've spent much of my life in between places.

 

My family's story reaches from Spain to Cuba, then New York and Miami. I later spent twenty years in the South, raising my family in Kentucky. I was drawn to the land there, its history and its deep sense of place. I came to care about it deeply, while never feeling that I completely belonged to it. Today, I find myself drawn to the openness, landscape and light of Colorado.

 

Each of these places has shaped me without entirely defining me.

 

I've begun to recognize that same sense of being in between in my work.

 

My paintings usually begin with loose sketches and drawings. These early marks are a form of open-ended exploration, building into larger mixed-media pieces through layers of drawing, color and texture. I add and remove, cover and reveal, allowing the original marks to remain visible even as something new develops around them.

It's a process that exists somewhere between intention and accident.

 

That tension is especially meaningful to me because I've spent more than two decades as a designer. Design asks me to make deliberate decisions, impose structure and solve problems. In the studio, I can loosen that control. The instincts are still there, but so is the opportunity to follow something without knowing exactly where it will lead.

 

Maybe that's why I keep returning to the in-between spaces.

 

Between the places we come from and the places we choose. Between belonging and being an outsider. Between what we inherit and what we make our own. Between structure and intuition.

 

My paintings don't attempt to explain those ideas or depict those places literally. They're simply where my own experiences, memories and instincts inevitably meet.

My story is part of the work, but it doesn't have to be the viewer's story.

 

We all have our own in-between spaces.
